The Art of Influence vs. The Science of Execution

The Art of Influence vs. The Science of Execution

1. Vision vs. Process: The Dreamer and the Doer

A leader says, “This is where we’re going.”

A manager says, “This is how we’ll get there.”

Without vision, execution has no direction. Without process, vision never becomes reality.

2. Influence vs. Authority: The Heart vs. The Handbook

Leaders earn respect through influence.

Managers maintain respect through authority.

True leadership involves feelings — can you get your folks to rally behind a shared goal?

3. “Let’s Roll the Dice” vs. “Let’s Check the Data”

Leaders take risks.

Managers manage risks.

Steve Jobs led Apple into uncharted territory. Tim Cook scaled it. Both were essential to Apple’s success.

4. People vs. Processes: The Coach vs. The Playbook

Leadership is about people — motivating, coaching, and inspiring.

Management is about processes — structuring, optimizing, and getting things done.

You don’t manage people, you lead them. You don’t lead spreadsheets, you manage them.

5. Today vs. Tomorrow: The Sprint and the Marathon

Managers focus on efficiency today.

Leaders focus on sustainability tomorrow.

A company with only managers might thrive in the short term but struggle with long-term innovation.

Final Thought: Be Both 🙋🏿

As a continuously aspiring leader, I’ve learned that leaders have to understand [and appreciate] management. On the flip side, the best managers embrace leadership.

My sweet spot? Lead with vision. Manage with precision.
